Free workshop for young bands
A shorter version of the full Band Development Workshop is
offered, free of charge, to band members aged 18 or under.
The event will take place on Saturday
18th February starting
at 1 p.m and will be held at The Shed Live Music venue in Leicester's Yeoman
Street.
The mini-workshop, presented by experienced band musicians
and members of the Artsin Productions Team, will cover things like
- How to organise a band
- How to win a bigger fan base
- How to do effective publicity for the band and its gigs
- How to get bookings at venues
The workshop will finish by 2 p.m., when the main stage will
be hosting a gig with a line-up of young bands.
Band members can attend the special workshop even if they
are not playing at the gig. There is no need to register; just turn up on the
day.
What it does
All of the members of an unsigned band can participate in
a workshop session which is designed to
- Help the band to improve its self-management
- Ensure the band can cover its costs and make money
- Get better bookings at venues
- Organise PR and publicity
- Build up a strong fan base
- Be better organised to achieve what the band wants
The workshops will NOT cover
- How to write better songs
- How to sing better
- How to play musical instruments better
but, if a band needs to do any of these things we can point
you in the direction of suitable tutors, coaches or producers.
The workshops are about:
Our workshops are about organisation and business;
we hope to create space and time for musicians to get on with the real business
of making enjoyable and successful music.
These workshops are practical; we are not there to sell anything.
The workshops are like training sessions but are limited to the two
hours that we make available.
If the band needs follow up support after the workshop has
finished we can provide this, on a limited basis.
Trials
One trial workshop was held on Saturday 19th November with
the members of a local rock band and the feedback from this was very satisfactory.
We plan to hold one more trial workshop before the end of 2011.
The trial workshops are free. They help us to get perfect
the programme and to test the resources we use, prior to offering the events
on a commercial basis.
Who should attend?
Workshops are for only one band at a
time. All the members
of the band should attend. If there are others who are part of the regular team,
they should also attend. For example, in some bands parents of the band members
play an active role in running the band - in this case, they should also attend.
We are also looking at alternative events where we deal with
more than one band in a workshop and also public workshops which can be booked
into by anybody. These will be launched next year.
Will it be about our band?
Each workshop is tailored to the band that will be attending.
We do have a standard package but we tailor the standard package to suit the
band that is coming to the workshop. We spend some time finding out about a band
before the workshop takes place. It's about your needs; not about what
we need to provide.
Will it cost anything?
There will be a fee. This will cover the cost of hiring a
room to work in, provided refreshments and any materials used. We might also
need to pay for some speakers if we decide to invite in additional experts. This
will vary from one workshop to another.
(This applies to the commercial events programmed for 2012)
The fee will be advised at the time of making a booking
enquiry but is likely to be between £50 and £60 per event (not per
person!)
The fee can be paid installments if that is necessary.
We will give a discount for bands aged 18 or under, not in
full time employment.
Where will workshops be held?
Most workshop sessions will be held in the centre of Leicester.
Most will be held on a Saturday, when band members are not at work,
college or school.
We will try to use existing live music venues, where these
are available.
